Coaching Best Practices: Helping Students Develop Their Purpose

Developing a clear purpose is one of the first and most important steps in a student’s learning journey. As a Coach, your guidance plays a crucial role in shaping this foundation.

Why is a Purpose Important?

  • It gives students a sense of direction and helps them stay motivated.

  • A well-defined purpose serves as a guiding principle for their learning path.

  • Once a purpose (or objective) is endorsed by a Coach, the system marks it as complete, and it is reflected in the LRM Coaching Sherpa Tool.

How Coaches Can Support Students in Defining Their Purpose:

Ask Thought-Provoking Questions – Help students reflect on their goals by asking:

  • What do you want to achieve through this program?

  • What skills or knowledge do you hope to gain?

  • Where do you see yourself in the future, and how does this learning experience support that vision?

Provide Constructive Feedback – If a student’s purpose is too broad or unclear, offer guidance to refine it into something specific and actionable.

Encourage a Growth Mindset – Let students know their purpose may evolve as they learn and gain new experiences.

Monitor Progress and Check-in Regularly – Keep track of whether students are making progress toward their purpose. Offer encouragement and adjustments if needed.

Celebrate and Endorse Strong Objectives – Once a student has defined a clear, meaningful purpose, provide an endorsement. This recognition validates their direction and marks a significant milestone in their learning journey.

By actively engaging with students in this process, Coaches can help them set a strong foundation for success and ensure they start their learning experience with confidence! 🚀✨
